About GAO
Continually rated one of the best places to work in federal
government, GAO is at the epicenter of government decision making. With
headquarters in Washington, D.C., GAO employees are on the front lines of
congressional oversight work. GAO officials frequently testify before Congress
and are cited regularly in the national press. Annually, GAO’s recommendations
lead to actions that improve government services. GAO also provides an
excellent return on investment, resulting in tens of billions of dollars in
financial benefits each year.
GAO’s Information Technology and Cybersecurity (ITC) Team leads
audits to help the government address important challenges. Specifically, the
ITC team evaluates other federal agencies’ implementation and management of
areas such as privacy, systems acquisition and development, investment management,
and cybersecurity. (GAO’s own IT operations are managed by an internal
technical support team, not the ITC team.)

Update Oct. 2019:
Several recent opportunities for students:
Article from the Utica Observer Dispatch, July 26, 2019:
Local
firm gets drone contract
Schumer:
AX Enterprise, Thales USA awarded $7.7M for research
By
Samantha Madison, smadison@uticaod.com
ROME
— AX Enterprize
LLC, based in Yorkville, and Thales USA have received a $7.7 million Air Force Research
Lab contract for drone research, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer announced
Thursday.
The
contract will allow the two companies to work on how civilian and military
unmanned aircraft systems can be safely integrated into the National Airspace
System, he said.
“The
Air Force made the right choice by selecting AX, Thales USA and the existing
UAS infrastructure in Rome for this critical work,” Schumer said in a
statement. “These investments are exactly the kind we envisioned when we
secured the FAA Test Site in Rome and why I make it a priority to increase
funding for Rome Lab each year. Safely integrating UAS into the national
airspace has enormous economic and national security potential for the United
States.”
The
work will be done at the Griffiss UAS Test Site in Rome by Yorkville-based AX Enterprize, Thales USA, NUAIR, Scherzi
Systems LLC and Syracuse University’s Center for Advanced Systems and
Engineering and the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute, according to Schumer.
AX
Enterprize has been working with all aspects of UAS
for years. The company has done work on the construction of the FAA’s New York
UAS Test Site Operations and Data Management Center at Griffiss International
Airport.
“
We believe this is an opportunity for AX to play an important role
in advancing the UAS industry in the U.S. while maintaining safety and security
in the National Airspace System,” said Pat Baskinger,
CEO of AX Enterprize, in a statement. “AX is thrilled
to be a part of this unique moment in aviation history.”
Thales
USA is a global leader in air traffic management solutions and recently established
a presence and dozens of jobs in the Mohawk Valley and Central New York.
Rome
Lab is the contracting authority and work is expected to be done by Sept. 30,
2020, according to Schumer.
U.
S. Rep. Anthony Brindisi called the contract and the ongoing drone technology
developments a win for Central New York and the local community.
“
Rome continues to lead the world in drone research,” Brindisi said in
a statement. “I am thrilled to see these local companies selected for this
contract.”
Before
multiple drones can fly in the same airspace as other manned aircraft,
procedures are needed for drone pilots to safely detect and avoid other air
traffic, which has been a major part of the work being done at the test site in
Rome. This project furthers that research.
The
contract also intends to develop a policy approach and data exchange models to
ensure that unmanned and manned aircraft can operate in close proximity safely
in the National Airspace System.
“I’m
pleased that the Air Force choose AX Enterprize and
Thales USA to receive this contract, and I would like to thank Sen. Schumer for
helping to secure it,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente
Jr. “This announcement is further evidence of the crucial importance of
collaboration between Rome Lab and Oneida County’s UAS Test Site at Griffiss
and of the value of having partners such as NUAIR, Syracuse University and Scherzi Systems.”
Article from the Utica Observer Dispatch, Oct 18, 2019:
Area
technology firms continue to grow
By
Jolene Cleaver
When
it comes to keeping information and research ventures in the Utica-Rome area,
stakeholders say there is staying power.
In
late September, Quanterion Solutions Incorporated in Utica was awarded a $41 million contract by
the United States Department of Defense for the operation of a Homeland Defense
& Security Information Analysis Center.
This
contract directly supports its work for the DOD in collection and analysis of
data for various federal contracts, said Quanterion
President Preston MacDiarmid, with data work conducted typically being in the
realms of infrastructure protection, biometrics, medical, cultural studies and
alternative energy.
“It
was a competitive contract. We were awarded based on our technical
capabilities. … It’s operating a DOD Center of Excellence,” MacDiarmid said.
And,
with support like the contract, more ventures are in the pipeline for Quanterion, which has been seated in Utica since 2000.
MacDiarmid just can’t talk about those ventures yet.
With
companies like Quanterion seated in the Utica-Rome
region, some agree the area is continually poised as a “tech valley” that is
showing growth.
In
Rome, New York State Technology Enterprise Corp. started in 1995 with three
employees at the former Griffiss Air Force Base.
But
this week, the technology consulting company that has grown to over 200
employees celebrated new corporate headquarters at the now-named Griffiss
Business and Technology Park.
As for the staying power of such
companies in the area, William Guglielmo of the Greater Rome Chamber of
Commerce, said in a statement, “Tech companies— such as Assured Information
Security, Alion Technologies, Booz Allen Hamilton,
and the Air Force Research Lab are competitively recruiting the world’s top
cyber talent.”
“Heightened
economic activity at Griffiss will benefit all of Rome because more people will
live in our community and take an active part in purchasing goods and services,
buying homes, renting apartments, participating in community events, attending
our schools and churches, and rebuilding our property tax base,” he said.
“Sales tax receipts will increase with more people spending money locally,
which will help local governments meet their financial obligations and
stabilize property taxes.” Contact reporter Jolene Cleaver at 315-792-4956 or

-----Start of NanoFactory
CBM posting -----
Nanofactory
CBN Inc. seeks a systems administrator to assist with current IT operations
working from the greater Ottawa ON area.
The candidate will work in a small team in cooperation with CBN IT in
New York to create innovative IT service solutions.
To ensure your success, we’ll take
the time to ramp you up on our company, products, systems and processes. Here’s what you can expect in your first
year:
The first few months or so you’ll
spend getting to know us, your team and ongoing projects. In addition, you’ll
be tasked with taking client calls, articulating issues and documenting them
effectively.
As you become more comfortable in
the role, you’ll begin to triage client issues, perform 1st level support for
workstations and resolutions for peripherals (printers, cameras, scanners,
etc.). You’ll also ensure escalations are clearly communicated, solutions are
communicated to clients, follow ups are completed and tickets closed.
By 6 months, you’ll leverage your
technical training to perform networking troubleshooting (connectivity, pings,
routing, etc.), as well as getting acquainted with our back-end services.
Within your first year, if we’ve
all done our job successfully, you’ll be authoring technical troubleshooting
guides, starting to specialize and become a SME in an area of interest and have
acquired the skills and knowledge to visit remote sites to perform installations
and troubleshooting.
Currently IT supports around 50
clients, we plan to expand to supporting around 200 in the next few years.
There is nothing more important to
us than our colleagues' success. On any
given day you could be dealing with network, peripheral, application, back-end

Looking to hire
interns in Syracuse, NY. James Carroll, SUNY Poly BS-NCS graduate says
“Just wanted to circle back around on this in 2019 - now that the crazy
"end of the year compliance" rush is over I'm looking at some
possible interns for this year. They would likely be traveling to
Syracuse/could work remote for the *right* candidate (working remote is not for
everyone as I'm sure you know). It’s a great place to work. Paid internship,
very laid back. 20+ year old company but still have a "start
up" culture and feel. We're small enough to be agile and take new
ideas and direction from good employees/new employees.”
